项目摘要

社会的知性仮説は、動物の脳や認知能力が複雑な社会的環境への適応の結果として進化したという仮説である。この仮説では、社会的により統合された個体が社会的により成功するとされ、ヒトでは社会的に統合され友達の多い者が発達した社会的認知能力をもつことが実証されている。しかし、ヒト以外の動物では、社会的知性の個体差と社会的統合の程度との関連を個体レベルで調べた研究はない。そこで、半野生馬を対象に、社会的知性の個体差と社会的成功・気質との相関を調べ、社会的知性仮説がヒト以外においても個体レベルで適用されるかを検討した。研究対象は宮崎県串間市都井岬に生息する御崎馬であった。観察研究により、個体間の親密さや順位・リーダーシップ性などを調べた。また野外での実験研究により、詳細な気質や社会的認知能力を調べた。現在はそれらのデータの整理・分析をおこなっている。このデータに、個体の性別や年齢・発達履歴といった人口統計学的変数も加え、個体ごとの詳細なプロフィールを把握し、仮説の実証を目指している。もう1つの研究では、飼育下のウマを対象としてクロスモーダルな対応に関する研究をおこなった。ヒトはある感覚刺激(例 : 高い音)を他の感覚刺激(例 : 明るい色)と対応づける生得的なバイアスを持っている。最近、チンパンジーでも同様のバイアスが見られることが実証された。しかし、このバイアスがヒト以外の動物でどれほど幅広く見られるかは知られていない。そこで、ヒトやチンパンジーから系統発生的に離れたウマにおいてこうした対応づけが見られるのかを検討した。具体的には、音の高さと色の明るさ、音の高さと空間位置との対応づけができるかを実験的に調べたが、ウマがそれらを結びつけて認識するという結果は得られなかった。本研究により、クロスモーダルな対応は動物界において稀な能力であり、高い情報処理能力を要する可能性が示された。
