本研究は日本人英語学習者のテキスト読解を研究対象とし，読解中の予期的推論の生成（後続のテキスト内容に関する予測）に関わる要因の検証，及び生成された予期的推論が誤っていた場合にその推論を修正するプロセスの検証を目的としたものである。推論の生成に関して本年度では，多くの先行研究で指摘されているような「読解方略教示の影響」についての検証を行った。実験では，特定の予期的推論の生成が促される英文を用いて，通常の読解と予測を促す教示を与えた条件での学習者の読解プロセスを比較した。読解直後に提示された推論情報に対する学習者の反応時間（語彙性判断時間）を分析した結果，英語熟達度の高い学習者においてのみ方略教示によって推論の生成が促されていることが示された。また，読解時間の分析からは，英語熟達度にかかわらず，方略教示がある場合に学習者はより注意深く英文を読解していたことが示唆された。読解から時間を空けて行われた再生課題の分析結果からは，方略教示によって学習者の注意が推論生成に向いた場合でも，明示的に記述されたテキスト情報の理解は減少しないことが明らかになった。推論の修正に関しては，学習者の推論が否定された際の読解プロセスを，読解中の眼球運動測定に基づいて検証した。推論を否定する文に対する注視時間を分析した結果，英語熟達度にかかわらず，学習者は自身の推論内容と読解しているテキスト情報の不一致を即座に検知していることが示された。一方で，英語熟達度の低い学習者は熟達度の高い学習者と比較して，推論内容を否定する文を自身のテキスト理解に統合することに大きな困難があることが明らかになった。これらの実証研究の結果は，日本人英語学習者が推論の生成やその修正において抱える困難を明らかにするものであり，これらの結果に基づいて効率的・柔軟な英文読解力を育成するための指導についての示唆が与えられた。
