本研究は、近年注目されている「反転授業」をもとに、英語入門期の生徒におけるスピーキング能力の向上とその評価基準のためのCAN-DOリスト構築を目指すものである。国際化への動向を踏まえて、英語のスピーキング力育成への社会的関心が高まってきている。学校英語教育においても発信する力が強調されるようになってきている。しかしながら、英語スピーキング能力の指導法もさることながら、その指導効果を計測する指標が定められていない現状があることは否めない。「国際共通語としての英語力向上のための5つの提言と具体的施策」（文部科学省, 2011）において、各中・高等学校が学習指導要領に基づき、求められる英語力を達成するための学習到達目標を「CAN-DOリスト」の形で具体的に設定する提言がなされた。 本研究では、反転授業（授業と宿題の役割を「反転」させる授業形態のこと）を用いる。通常は授業中に生徒へ講義を行い、知識を伝達し、授業外で既習内容の復習を行い、学んだ知識の定着を促す。これに対し、反転授業では自宅で講義ビデオなどのデジタル教材を使って学び、授業に先立って知識の習得を済ませる。そして教室では講義の代わりに、学んだ知識の確認やディスカッション、問題解決学習などの協同学習により、学んだ知識を「使うことで学ぶ」活動を行う。このような授業形態を導入することで、生徒の学習意欲を向上させて知識の定着を促し、落ちこぼれを防ぐなどの効果が期待されている。さらに、その評価基準のための効果的な「CAN-DOリスト」を構築する。それをもとに、スピーキングパフォーマンスの関係を調査し、自己評価を行うことの利点を探るとことを目的としている。全体のシステム設計は、研究代表者吉田が行い、教材作成・CAN-DOリスト構築は、吉田と共同研究者加賀田が行う。
