项目摘要

最終年度となる今年度は、研究計画に挙げた命令形の形態に着目すること、間接言語行為の分析を行うことを通して、中英語期のポライトネス・ストラテジーを明らかにすることに時間を割いた。１点目の命令形の形態について、英語史において変化の一つとされる屈折語尾の衰退について、動詞の命令形の屈折語尾も、15世紀の中ごろには消失した。消失する前の時代では、2人称代名詞の使い分けと同様、単数の相手への命令文に、複数形態の-eth語尾がついている例が見られる。韻律の要請に過ぎない、と主張している論考もあるが、『カンタベリー物語』の80を超える写本間のヴァリエーションの精査、現代英語に見られる動詞と指令表現の相関性といった複眼的視点から調査を行い、命令形の複数語尾が単数に用いられた場合、2人称複数代名詞が用いられるのと類似して、丁寧さが付け加えられることを例証した。得られた成果について、途中経過を東京都立大学中世英語英文学研究会第169回例会において発表し、多くの示唆を得た。この研究発表を拡張させる形で日本中世英語英文学会第35回全国大会にて口頭発表を行い、学会発表奨励賞を受賞した。２点目の間接言語行為の分析について、特に初期中英語期の作品の分析に力を入れた。成果の一例として、間接言語行為を意図して発話されたWill you VP? について、聞き手はその応答から、指令表現として理解しなかった例が見られた。その後、話し手は命令形を用いて同一の内容を指令表現という機能的並行性をもって発話していることから、話し手はWill you VP? を指令表現として用いた可能性が高いことを分析した。また、これまでの研究の概要について、City University of New YorkのProf. Momma Harukoを招いたセミナーで発表する機会を得て、今後の研究への原動力を得た。
