项目摘要

令和4年度もコロナ禍で海外での草稿研究を果たすことはできなかったが、英語論文'Beckett’s Monadology and the Anti-Catastrophic Aesthetics' (Samuel Beckett and Catastrophe, Palgrave MacMillan, 2023)を出版することはできた。これは2018年(平成30年）のIASIL JAPANでのベケット・シンポジウムでの発表を発展させたもので、ベケット作品がライプニッツのモナドロジーの枠組みをいかにその根底に活かしているかを示すものとなった。ベケット自身が『勝負の終わり』の演出家アラン・シュナイダーに語った「カタストロフィの不可能性」をキーワードに、その終わりそうで終わりのない形式には、始まりも終わりもないモナド、運動を続けるモナドの概念が潜んでいることを指摘した。「我々が誕生と呼ぶものは展開と成長であり、我々が死と呼ぶものは包み込みと減少である」というライプニッツの『モナドロジー』に見られる概念は、ベケットの文学作品においては、さまざまな変容を見せる。「いつ死んだか分からない」、「生まれる前におれはあきらめた」などの一連のテクストは、生と死の境目を越境する主体が語りの中心にいる。すべてを内包するモナドは、他者との交通手段を持たない。その特性は小説であれ戯曲であれ、ベケットの主人公たちのコミュニケーションの不可能性に表象されている。さらに反復する身体的運動と反復する言語・イメージは、ライプニッツのすべては予め決められているという予定調和の枠組みを反映しつつも、それを内から破綻させる試みもある。そこには、ベケット自身がまっただ中にいた第二次世界大戦、ホロコーストという人類史上大きな事件が影響をしている。
