本研究では、大正期の少年雑誌である『日本少年』に出現する外来語を調査している。先行研究では、明治期には気取った感じを与えていた外来語が、大正期には普通の日常語となったといわれている。しかしそうした指摘があるにもかかわらず、語彙量に比して研究が少ない。そこでこれまでに、男性向けの雑誌である『中央公論』『婦人公論』、少女向けの雑誌である『少女の友』を対象に、当時の外来語の実態を探ってきた。これらの成果を踏まえ、本研究では、位相の広がりを見るために、これまでに日本語学的研究の対象とされてこなかった少年向け雑誌を扱うことにした。1年目である2021年8月から産休・育休を取得しており、2年目にあたる2022年の10月から研究を再開した。1年目に、研究対象となる『日本少年』の複写依頼を予定していた図書館に問い合わせたところ、所蔵されている資料の状態が悪く、複写ができないことが判明していた。当該の図書館は遠方で、宿泊が必要な場所にあり、語彙調査の性質上、悉皆調査や当該語句の前後の文脈を確認する必要があるため、通うという形で調査を遂行することは難しい。そのため、研究再開後に別の所蔵図書館を探し、資料の複写依頼を行うことにした。所属する大学の附属図書館の司書の方にお力添えいただき、国文学研究資料館や国際日本文化研究センター等に複写を依頼することができた。年度末までに調査範囲の半分以上にあたる資料を入手できた。複写した資料が散逸しないよう製本する作業についても、一部ではあるが行った。
