项目摘要

本研究の目的は、平仮名の歴史と女性がどのような文脈の下で結びつけられてきたのかを、近代の資料を対象として明らかにすることである。国語学のみならず、文学史・教育史・書道史などの資料を渉猟しながら、平仮名と女性がどのように論じられてきたのかを包括的な視点から解明する。2022年度は、文学史を扱った資料を対象として言説の収集、および整理、その把握を中心に行った。文学史の資料を重点的に調査したのは、以下の2点の理由による。まず文学史では中古和文作品とその担い手である女性について触れることが多く、平仮名と女性に関する記述を見ていく上で適していたためである。また、文学史を扱った資料では平仮名成立が文学に与えた影響を指摘することが多く、平仮名の成立がどのように記述されたかを調べる上でも適していたからである。鷹津義彦『文学史の方法論』（桜楓社、1966年）や、近代において文学史がどのように編纂されてきたかを扱った先行研究を参考にしながら、68点の資料を調査した。その結果、以下の点が明らかとなった。〔1〕文学史を扱った資料においては、平仮名の作者を女性と見なす言説が見られないことが明らかとなった。文学史が編纂され始めた明治20年代から明治30年代までは、平仮名は空海が作ったとする説を踏襲する資料も存在していたが、それ以降の時期においては一人の手に成るものではないとする説が一般化することを明らかにした。〔2〕平仮名の別称と見なされてきた「女文字」「女手」という用語が使用されていたことに着目し、男性は漢文、女性は仮名という対立構図から文学史を記述する資料が多く見られる。しかし、その中には男性が平仮名を使用することに触れるもののあれば、男性は当時平仮名を全く使用していなかったと見なすものもあり、平仮名と女性の関係についてはそれぞれ異なる立場をとることがあることを明らかにした。
