The aim of the interdisciplinary collaborative research centre 522 "Environment and Region - Environmental Analysis and Environmental Management Strategies for a sustainable Development in Rural Areas" of Trier University, supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and based on a scientifically sound environment diagnosis, is to put a value on spaces and land utilisation activities in the region in order to estimate the further development of environmental conditions, development options and land-use alternatives.The involved disciplines from the natural-, economy- and social sciences are pursuing in a close interdisciplinary co-operation to judge the ecological, economical and social problems of the region, to discover their reasons in sectors of economy, society, politics, law, culture and to offer strategies and measures for a sustainable improvement of the ecological, economical and social conditions.
