项目摘要

本研究の目的は、言語使用者に着目した語用論的な観点から、初期近代英語におけるテンス・アスペクトを分析し、これら時間を表す文法範疇の本質を明らかにすることにある。言語使用者の態度がこれらの文法範疇の選択に決定的に重要であるという本研究の立場から、やはり言語使用者の態度を表すモダリティと関連づけながら分析を行った。まず、広く言語学及び文献学の文献から、テンス、アスペクト、モダリティ、また、コーパスとなる初期近代英語及びシェイクスピアに関する文献を調査した。次に、対話が豊富で、当時の言語、特に話し言葉が比較的正確に反映されていると考えられるシェイクスピア劇を中心にデータベースを作成した。分析を行ったのは、統語論的要因(平叙文/疑問文、主節/従属節、本動詞/助動詞、語順等)、意味論的要因(モダリティ、時、動詞句のアスペクト等)に加え、語用論的要因及び語用論と関わりの深い次の要因である。すなわち、言語行為、(話し手、聞き手等の)参与者、参与者相互の(特に社会言語学的な)関係、談話あるいは対話の流れ、テクストの種類(ダイアローグ/モノローグ/スピーチ、韻文/散文)、コンテクスト(言語的、社会的、感情的)、論理的関係である。分析にあたっては、副詞類や談話標識等、特定の解釈を促進する要素に着目した。歴史語用論は、歴史的なデータの分析を得意とする文献学と理論や一般化を重要視する言語学との融合を目指す画期的な試みであるが、意味論が統語論と未分化の状態で語用論を導入するなど、理論的な問題をかかえている。本研究は、こういった問題を解消することにより、理論の整備につとめた。
