本研究課題は、1860年代から1940年代まで、連邦結成と連邦編入を連続的な過程として長期的に捉えるとともに、島嶼地域、特に大西洋側のニューファンドランド島と太平洋側のバンクーバー島の動向を重点的に分析し、それを地域横断的に把握することで、島嶼地域からみた「カナダ連邦結成・連邦編入」史像を解明することを目指している。ニューファンドランド島に関しては、これまで研究代表者は、科研費助成事業（研究課題「ニューファンドランドと北大西洋世界史―決裂と妥結のカナダ連邦加入交渉の分析」（2017～21年度）にて、20世紀初頭～中葉のニューファンドランド島について分析を行なっており、本年度（2022年度）は、前研究課題で積み残していた1860年代の動向について考察した。具体的には、ケベック会議におけるニューファンドランド島の扱いをめぐる議論を分析したうえで、ケベック会議で採択された「ケベック決議」が、同会議後のニューファンドランド島政府・議会等においてどのように受け止められたのかにつき考察し、その成果の一部を論文化した。バンクーバー島に関しては、同島を含むブリティッシュ・コロンビアの通史の理解に努めたが、十分な時間を割くことができなかった。とはいえ、「セトラー・コロニアリズム」の論点の重要性を見出すことができ、連邦編入に対するバンクーバー島とブリティッシュ・コロンビア本土それぞれの動向の分析に加え、先住民の処遇の問題を視野に入れる必要性につき考究する機会を得た。
