Die FS Maria S. Merian Reise 09 umfasst die Forschungsvorhaben von mindestens sechs Arbeitsgruppen, die sich mit den ozeanographischen und geodynamischen Gegebenheiten im NW Atlantik, in der Labrador-See und Baffinbai, hinsichtlich Wassermassen-Verteilung, der Paläo-Klimageschichte und Evolution und Ökologie von planktischen Organismen, sowie der Entwicklung des Ozeanbeckens zwischen Grönland und Kanada befassen. Nahezu alle Arbeitsgruppen verfolgen einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, um das Beziehungsgeflecht im System Erde in der Gegenwart und der Vergangenheit zu verstehen. Die Reise MSM 09 ist in drei Abschnitte gegliedert, beginnt am 23. Juli in Bremerhaven und endet am 29. Oktober 2008 in Pt. Delgada.
