项目摘要

三カ年の研究期間最終年度となった今年度は、日本関連の記事の分析作業を本格化させた。まず前提として、コーパスに入力ミスが無いように念入りにチェックを入れながら、全体の記事を分析しながら再度読み通した。完成したコーバスは全体で21万語以上となった。前年度に定量的な予備調査を行い、江口(1998)という形でとりまとめた経験から、質的分析も採録した記事二年分を一つの単位として扱い、合計五つの時代区分ごとに分析を行った。幸い、ドイツ学術交流会の援助を受け、ドイツ、マンハイムのドイツ語研究所所長ゲルハルト・シュティッケル教授からのレビューを受けることができた。このドイツ滞在により、EGUCHI(1999)という関連成果の形で、コーパス概念との関連で本研究の位置づけを確認するとともに、分析手法に関しても、シュティッケル教授らの示唆を受けて、当初予定していたもの以外に、新たにステレオタイプに基づくテクスト分析を加えることができた。この結果、コロケーション分析、ステレオタイプ分析を基本に、1950年代から順に五つの時代に関して、それぞれの時代ごとの分析結果を得た上で、この日本イメージの中核を成す語彙やステレオタイプの変遷を図式化することができた。結論を単純化すれば、過去50年間で日本に関するイメージに持続的に付帯するマイナスの要素がある一方で、新たにプラスにもマイナスにも解釈されうる要素が加わっていることが実証された。この点については、活字メディアの持つ批判的な論調だけに原因を求めることはできない、現実世界の反映や深層文化的な背景があると考えられる。
