项目摘要

昨年度の資料収集とその分析を通して、近世のドイツ人犯罪者集団は、同じ階層に属するユダヤ人たちとの接触を通じて、後者に独特のヘブライ語表現を広範囲に吸収していることを確認した。またそれらのヘブライ語表現は、当時の一般のユダヤ人民衆の間における意味・用法とはかなり異なる。独自のものであることも確認できた。今年度は、こうした言語内容の変容が、ドイツ人犯罪者層の間でようやく生じたものなのか、あるいは彼らにヘブライ語表現が伝えられる以前すでに独自性が付与されていたのかについて確認を試みた。そのため、これらヘブライ語起源の隠語表現を、その意味ごとに整理分析した。この結果、例えばヘブライ語の数字「28」が犯罪者集団の間では「暴力」を意味するようになるなど、独自の意味内容の変容をささえる論理は、ユダヤ教独自の文化的民俗学的思考様式であることが明らかになった。すなわちこの変容は、ユダヤ教文化に育ったユダヤ人によってのみ可能なのである。これは本研究による新しい発見であると言える。ドイツ人犯罪者集団の間で隠語が成立するには、当時中欧において多くのユダヤ人が彼らの共同体から離脱し、その外部の世界で犯罪者集団を形成後、独自の言語文化を発展させたことが背景となっているのである。こうした下層ユダヤ人の独自の言語文化は、その後東欧で発展したイディッシュ語へ影響を与えるとともに、東欧系ユダヤ人の北米大陸への移住によって、現代英語にも紛れ込むようになった。OEDにイディッシュ語語源として収録されている語彙が、実はイディッシュ語そのものではなく、イディッシュ語を話すユダヤ人犯罪者の「隠語的表現」であることを確認できたことも、本研究による新しい知見であると考える。
