聞き取り調査、資料調査、別途おこなった現地調査などから以下のことを明らかにした。1)アジアの森林保全には、法による罰則や巡視の強化はほとんど役に立っておよず、地域住民の経済的安定が不可欠であること。2)通常それは、生産量増加、換金作物への転換などによって達成されうると考えられているが、現実には農業収入の増加が森林収奪の緩和停止には結びついていないこと。3)森林保全が直接地域住民の収入増に結ぶつく方策が必要であり、森林を観光資源とするツーリズムは森林保全と収入増を同時に達成する有力な手段であること。そのようなツーリズムをサステイナブルツーリズムとする。4)サステ-ナブルツーリズムの資源は森林を中心とするが、その他の自然、湖などの景観資源などのほか、田園・農村景観、都市、遺跡など地域に存するものを柔軟に取り込む必要があり、それらを有機的に組み合わせることが重要であること。5)欧米日のツ-リストに魅力あるツーリズムを演出する工夫が重要であること。それは、(1)秘境性(奥地でたどりつくのが容易でないように感じられる)、(2)エスニック性の演出(アジアの熱帯らしさ)、(3)利用拠点のアメニティ確保(居心地良い空間は不可欠)、(4)良好な景観の提供(景観が最大の資源で、見るだけなら資源を枯渇疲弊させない)6)地域住民の収入に繋がるようにするためには、(1)エコツーリズムの導入によるガイド需要喚起、(2)利用拠点や交通機関のサービス職員雇用の誘導、(3)ツ-リストのニーズを的確に読み込んだみやげ物開発とその生産委託など、多様なことが早い段階から企画される必要があること。
