Here we propose an international collaborative research program to investigate spin pumping and spin transport in multicomponent nanowires. Our experimental approach is based on magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM), a novel imaging technique which has the unique ability to image spin structures in three dimensions with high resolution.Our materials of choice are filled multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Fe-MWCNTs are crystalline, quasi one-dimensional ferromagnetic nanowires encased in protective carbon nanotube shells. Techniques for fabricating and manipulating these nanotube systems are well developed. Nanotube manipulation procedures include tailoring by local oxidation, opening, further filling, local bending, attaching to predefined sample locations, and preparing electrically connected nanotube systems.We propose global and local ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments on individual Fe-MWCNTs including measurements of the damping due to pumping of spin from resonant into non-resonant regions.We intend to synthesize multicomponent filled carbon nanotubes containing ferromagnetic and normal conductor fillings in the course of the proposed research. These hybrid systems will be used in order to pump spin into adjacent nanotube sections and to image electrically detected spin pumping.
