HIV-1-induced disease involves the complex interactions of viral and host factors. To better understand the host response to viral infection, the differential display technique was used to identify genes that are differentially expressed between HIV-1-infected and -uninfected macrophages. For several genes, differential expression was confirmed by RNA gel blot (Northern) analysis. The study revealed both genes that are expressed at higher levels in infected cells, as well as ones that are expressed at higher levels in infected cells. Several of these genes had very restricted or undetectable expression in uninfected tissues.
