The Ascension of Jesus Christ: a theological investigation through liturgy, ritual and the cultural arts

Attitudes to embodiment are expressed not only through philosophical discourse, but also through ritualswhich interpret our bodies' limits and possibilities, their interconnectedness, and their relationship to atranscendent 'other'. Within Christianity, this has been particularly true of rituals focused on the life,death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. My research focuses on the ritual exploration of Christ'sAscension. Existing scholarship on the Ascension has paid scant attention to such ritual, or to expressionsof the Ascension in the wider cultural arts. I will bring these sources into critical conversation, to reimaginethe theology of the Ascension.
