Quantum Technology is a priority for governments and tech giants, who have spent billions on recent initiatives. It is widely accepted that photons are the only viable route for achieving quantum-secure communications, distributed computing or imaging. Innovation has resulted in numerous UK quantum- photonics start-ups including Nu Quantum, ORCA, Duality, Wave Photonics, Arqit, Aeqig. Many use semiconductor technology to create, control and detect photons. As technology has matured, the complexity of the photonic states that can be created and manipulated has grown, with breakthroughs reported every few months in the highest impact journals. This project will develop a toolkit to benchmark these multiphoton states, which is urgently required if end-users are to have confidence in the devices heading towards the market. You will have the chance to create and characterise semiconductor quantum-dot sources in Cardiff, with samples grown in the National Epitaxy Facility (via second supervisor Dr Ian Farrer), and to work with the National Physical Laboratory, the UK's metrology centre-of-excellence, with Dr Alastair Sinclair and Dr Phil Dolan.
