This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project will enable researchers to map data from studies of macaque and human brains over the Web into high-resolution 3-dimensional brain atlases. Investigators will be able to see and measure automatically the overlap between classical brain structures, areas in which specific genes are expressed, areas of activation revealed by brain imaging, and other experimental data. Modern genomics and noninvasive imaging technologies allow scientists to scan the whole brain for focal areas of gene expression or neural activity. These techniques hold great promise for analyzing structure-function relationships in the brain, but they do not reveal the anatomical boundaries of brain structures well enough for researchers to identify precisely the locations of genetic involvement or brain activation relative to known brain structures. This project will allow researchers to print-out cross-sectional maps of the brain 'cut' at any angle and position from 3D digital atlases, modify them to match individual variation, and overlay them on experimental histologic, MRI or PET sections to show the approximate boundaries of structures not visible by those techniques. The macaque brain atlas will be created by merging the landmark boundaries of brain structures identified by MRI, blockface photos and histological photomicrographs to produce a digital 3-dimensional template atlas of the entire rhesus (Macaca mulatta) brain. The human brain atlas will be created from sections previously published by Prof. Juergen Mai, of Heinrich Heine University, Duesseldorf Germany. The 3D models will reside in the BrainInfo website at the National Primate Research Center at the University of Washington (http://braininfo.rprc.washington.edu). Researchers at other institutions will be able to map data into the atlas over the Web for comparison with data mapped by others, or transfer the atlases to computers in their own laboratories. This project will accelerate the communication of new research findings among neuroscientists the world over and will improve our understanding of areas of the brain involved in such disorders as autism, dementia, depression and schizophrenia.
