This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Prevnar¿ is a vaccine for infants and children that helps prevent certain invasive pneumococcal disease caused by streptococcus pneumonia, which can cause life-threatening meningitis and blood infections. The objective of this experiment is to assess whether Prevnar¿ + ISS vaccine formulations enhance the immunogenicity in adult baboons of the Prevnar¿ licensed pneumococcal vaccine. This experiment will help determine if the addition of ISS can enhance the immune response to a pneumococcal polysaccharide antigen vaccine. The pneumococcal vaccine has yearly manufacturing shortages that require physicians to reduce pediatric immunization recommendations - babies don¿t end up getting all the doses of vaccine they are supposed to, and are therefore not optimally protected. ISS enhanced immunologic responses may allow use of a lower antigen dose, thereby reducing yearly vaccine shortages and enhancing infant health. This new pneumococcal vaccine (Prevnar + ISS) may be beneficial to society since it could improve responses to pneumococcal antigens in infants.
