INFLAMMATORY GENE POLYMORPHISMS IN CARDIAC SURGERY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a potent trigger of the systemic inflammatory response, which includes activation of leukocytes and producation of multiple pro-inflammatory mediators. Its consequences includes multi-organ system dysfunction, capillary leak, altered coagulation, and increased ,orbidity and mortality. [1] In sepsis, a condition in which the inflammatory response shares mechanistic and clinical simularities to that seen with CPB, polymorphisisms of specific inflammatory genes have been associated with alterations in inflammatory cytokine production and increased mortality. Based upon this information, we propose a prospective observational study to investigate the realationship between inflammatory gene polymorphisms, produaction of circulating inflammatory mediators, and clinical outcome for infants undergoing cardiac surgerywith CPB.
