ACTG A5142 LOPINAVIR/RITONAVIR PLUS EFAVIRENZ FOR HIV-1 INFECTION

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Compare the time to virologic failure pairwise in HIV 1 between the three treatments groups, (1) Lopinavir/Ritonavir plus Efavirenz, (2) Lopinavir/Ritonavir plus Stavudine Extended Release (or Zidovudine) plus Lamivudine or (3) Efavirenz plus Stavudine Extended Release (or Zidovudine) plus Lamivudine. Compare time to regimen completion pairwise between the 3 treatment groups. Regimen completion will be defined as either virologic failure or toxicity-related discontinuation of any component of the initial randomized treatment regimen. Compare treatment groups occurrence of peripheral lipoatrophy as measured by limb DEXA. Compare groups on metabolic abnormalities.
