英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is an investigator-initiated multicenter protocol to study the placebo effect in 600 patients nationwide. Patients with mild asthma are randomized to Singulair or placebo and further randomized to enhanced "non-drug" interventions or no intervention in a 2 x 2 format. A fifth group receives usual care. Non-drug interventions include the use of big blue capsules (versus small white ones), multimedia educational programs, and caregiver prescriptions for nurse coordinators. Patients are followed for 6 weeks. The primary endpoint is peak flow as measured by spirometry. The study does not require the placebo group to have any reduction in their baseline treatment because of enrollment.
