INBRE: URI: CENTRALIZED RES CORE FACILITY

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Centralized Research Core Facility is in its third year of providing research and training support to the RI-INBRE members and the Rhode Island biomedical research community. A vacant research associate position has recently been filled. During the past year, more than 20 research groups used the Facility, with an average frequency of 400 usages per quarter. Besides the faculty, the users included 14 postdoctoral fellows, 40 graduate students, and 23 undergraduate students. The new users were trained in utilizing various technologies for their research projects. Utilizing the Core Facility, the Facility staff also participated in teaching undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses offered by the College of Pharmacy. Several instructional and training seminars were organized in collaboration with instrument manufacturers, such as Real-Time PCR and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrometry. To set up a new gene transfection facility, equipment has been acquired, consisting of incubator, shaking incubator, PCR, and horizontal gel electrophoresis system. In addition, the existing inverted microscope will be upgraded for digital image processing. Other equipment and software packages acquired this year include: a NanoDrop fluorospectrometer, a rotary evaporator, and Rosetta Resolver software for the DNA microarray system. The Core Facility equipment and it's resources continue to be made available to researchers from all Rhode Island academic and research institutions, without paying any user fees. As of February 2006, the printing service has already printed about 200 posters this year for investigators from the member institutions. In April 2006, a one-day workshop on flow cytometry is scheduled. Like the previous instructional workshops, this workshop will be open to students and investigators from all RI-INBRE partner institutions.
