This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Centralized Research Core Facility is in its fifth year of providing research and training support to the RI-INBRE participants and the Rhode Island biomedical research community. During the current year more than fifty three research groups used the facility, with an average frequency of approximately 1106 total usages per quarter. The Facility users consisted of 12 faculty, 17 postdoctoral fellows, 57 graduate students, and 29 undergraduate students. The Core Facility staff trained all new users in utilizing various technologies for their research projects. The Facility staff also participated in teaching various techniques in the undergraduate and graduate laboratory courses offered by the College of Pharmacy. In addition, several instructional seminars and training workshops were organized in collaboration with the instrument manufacturers. This year, the topics included the following: Novel TaqMan Array and microRNA Research Tools; Gene Silencing with siRNA and miRNA; New Concepts in Real Time PCR; Electrophoresis 2DE and 2D-DIGE: Theory and Practice; and Fast and Efficient Extraction of DNA, RNA, Proteins and Drugs. A QSTAR Elite Hybrid LC/MS/MS System was purchased to replace the Mariner LC/MS System. Also, the software for the Bioanalyzer System was upgrade. The Core Facility equipment and resources continue to remain available to researchers from the RI-INBRE partner institutions. No user fees were charged for equipment usage as all participating institutions contributed funds toward maintaining the Facility. This year, the poster printing service printed 268 posters for various investigators. A fee for this service will be implemented soon to recover the cost of consumables. Overall, the usage of the Core Facility continues to increase.
