This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of the study is to determine the capacity of a DNA-hsp65 vaccine to elicit an immune response against the bacterium that causes TB. Rhesus monkeys will receive only a candidate vaccine against mycobacterial (tuberculosis) infection. They will not be challenged with M tuberculosis. We expect that the vaccinated groups will demonstrate a protective immune response mainly mediated by cells in the blood and by cytokines (small proteins that regulate communication among immune system cells).
