This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Aim 1: To determine regional brain changes in blood oxygen level dependent(BOLD) contrast during cognitive performance at several time points before, during and after 62 hours of total sleep deprivation (TSD) in healthy volunteers. Aim2: To examine the joint effects of TSD and time of day on cerebral BOLD response to cognitive demands. Aim3: To evaluate changes in cerebral BOLD response to cognitive demands with increasing time on task and to determine how time on task interacts with TSD to influence cerebral response. Aim4: To determine if 1 or 2 nights of recovery sleep reverse the effects of TSD on cerebral BOLD response to cognitive demands. Aim 5: To examine the effects of repeated cognitive testing on the FMRI measures of brain function used during this study.
