EFFECTS OF TNF-ALPHA ANTAGONISM IN PATIENTS WITH THE METABOLIC SYNDROME

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of TNF-alpha blockade in patients with Metabolic Syndrome, as defined by the NCEP criteria. Previous studies have suggested a potential "adipo-vascular" axis, the initiation of inflammation from adipocyte derived cytokins which trigger the development of atherosclerosis. We hypothesize TNF-alpha blockade in patients with metabolic syndrome will positively affect inflammatory markers of cardiac risk such as endothelial function and glucose tolerance.
