英文摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The first purpose of this study is to determine if Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) runs in families. IED is a disorder notable for frequent and sudden outbursts of anger that leads to problems with other people socially or at work. A second purpose is to see if a history of IED is related to differences in the function of serotonin (a chemical which is thought to be involved in anger) as measured through studies on blood platelets and/or in variations in certain genes that can be detected by examining DNA in blood samples.
This study will involve 100 Subjects (Probands) with IED and first-degree relatives of these subjects as well as 100 Control Subjects (Healthy Volunteers) and their first-degree relatives. We expect at least four (4) relatives per subject (proband).
If you agree to take part in this study you will undergo a series of diagnostic interviews, give a small sample of blood for platelets and for DNA testing (this testing looks at aspects of brain chemistry), complete several paper and pencil questionnaires about your moods, behavior, and recollections of family life while you were growing up, and complete several sets of computer tasks. Overall, these procedures will take about eight to ten (8-10) hours of your time. These procedures can be spread out over two or more days at your convenience. Finally, you will be asked to help us in contacting members of your immediate family to take part in this study as well.
