COMPARISON OF LANTUS AND NPH INSULIN IN THE DAWN PHENOMENON

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. In type 1 diabetes, the challenge has been to maintain blood glucose as close to the non-diabetic range as possible. Insulin regimens using insulins with varied activity profiles and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion have been somewhat successful in mimicking normal pancreatic function. Insulin analogues that provide more stable, basal physiologic insulin levels have led to the development of newer multiple daily injection regimens. We will investigate the differential effects of the very long-acting insulin glargine vs NPH on glycemic control during the early AM (dawn phenomenon) in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
