This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The primary objective of Look AHEAD is to examine, in overweight volunteers with type 2 diabetes, the long-term effects of an intensive lifestyle intervention program designed to achieve and maintain weight loss by decreased caloric intake and increased physical activity. This program is compared to a control group receiving diabetes support and education. The primary outcome, which will be compared between the two treatment groups, is the incidence of serious cardiovascular events. Other outcomes include cardiovascular disease risk factors, diabetes-related metabolic factors and complications, and cost-effectiveness of the intensive intervention.
Look AHEAD
