This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the safety and feasibility of a tailored 12-week tai chi program in patients with diastolic heart failure (DHF) as compared to a community-based aerobic exercise program. This study will also estimate exercise intensity of each group, explore psychosocial and physiological responses to both exercises and provide preliminary estimates of cost. This is a prospective, randomized controlled pilot trial of 20 patients. Outcome measurements include exercise capacity, health related quality-of-life, mood, exercise self-efficacy, serum B-type natriuretic peptide levels, echocardiographic analysis, heart rate variability and autonomic tone.
