This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Malaria, a disease caused by protozaon parasites of the genus Plasmodium, is one of the most dangerous infectious disease affecting human populations. The purpose of this research is to determine the conditions that help the multiplication of the parasite in human red blood cells. The scientific information received from this study may help understand the disease and identify new drugs or a vaccine against malaria. Research in the Lab will focus on how the Human Malaria Parasite develops within human red blood cells. Our goal is to characterize, at the molecular level, the pathways essential for the parasite survival with an eye toward future drug development.
