项目摘要
This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
The divisions of Medicine and Neurology at UNM are responding to an emerging viral disease, West Nile Virus, by participating in NIH sponsored trials describing the natural history of illness and testing a new therapy.
The proposed studies aim to 1) test safety and efficacy (phase I/II) of WN immune globulin in preventing or abrogating severe WN disease in high risk population groups, and 2) to define the natural history of WN infection.
The proposed studies will integrate basic science and clinicalscience. Virus characterization and immune responses will take place at U. Alabama and at UNM. Clinical studies include an observational study and a Phase I/II treatment trial. Educational aspects include mentoring of fellows, residents and junior faculty who will be participating as new investigators on the trials.
