英文摘要
Millions of devices made from diverse biocompatible materials are placed in humans each year for a variety of reasons. These devices, which include orthopedic implants and vascular stents, are relatively effective but still need significant improvement. Their longevity is limited and their success depends on the patient's overall health. In addition, the aging population of Canada and other industrialized countries is generating an increased demand for implants. Improving implantable devices is therefore a priority for the health sector. Cells are known to respond to charges and variations in the local charge distribution. Ion implantation is a plasma-based technique that permits to insert ions with precise depth control, thereby allowing variable charge distribution at the surface. This technique has already been used to modify Ti-based materials by implanting Ca and P ions. Here we propose to combine this approach with our nanotexturing methodology for Ti and Ti alloys, which has already given outstanding results in that it greatly accelerates the formation of calcified tissues. This step will help us understand to what extent charge distribution at the surface affects cell adhesion and behavior in general, a result of fundamental value but which can be applied effectively to improve biocompatibility. Ion implantation equipment and expertise represent the core expertise of our industrial partner. Plasmionique, Inc. participates both with a significant cash contribution (103,000 $ over three years) as well as in kind, contributing the use of their equipment for plasma based modification of surfaces and their extensive expertise.
