英文摘要
The goal of this project is to communicate data at 40 Gb/s, equivalent to 25 parallel channels of uncompressed high-definition digital television, over 50 meters of television cable.  This is roughly one order of magnitude beyond the current state-of-the-art and close to the theoretical limit of the cable's capacity.  Two potential system architectures will be pursued.  The first requires a high-power transmitter to overcome the cable's losses.  The second relies on sophisticated signal processing to recover the noisy data. The investigators are two world-leaders in the areas of high-frequency integrated circuit design for digital communication applications at the University of Toronto.  The project will leverage the University of Toronto's unique test facilities for high-frequency integrated circuit characterization.  Graduate students will make use of the world's most advanced fabrication technologies.  During the course of the 3-year project, 8 - 10 highly qualified personnel will be trained for Canada's $130-billion information and communications technologies sector.  At the same time, the research results will confer a strong competitive advantage in communications electronics to Candadian industry.  The project is supported by Gennum Corporation of Burlington, Ontario, an industry leader in video transport and digital communications integrated circuits.
