Within the global context of water quality and green energy new research areas have emerged. The research program that would be supported by the proposed infrastructure combined two complementary areas of research: treatment and valorization of wastewater. The analytical equipment requested, a preparative HPLC, will allow the preparation of samples collected during degradation experiment and biohydrogen production experiments for further identification of the degradation products and metabolites. The proposed configuration, including a UV detector, will also allow the monitoring of concentration of pharmaceuticals during the degradation experiments. The main outcomes of the research are the improvement and development of technologies and processes, new insight into the production of biohydrogen from wastewater and the development of bioreactors and processes for efficient and stable production of biohydrogen. The Canadian private sectors will also benefit from the research through the high qualified personnel formed and the opportunities to capitalize on this research to improve and develop technologies that mitigate the release of pharmaceuticals in the environment or allow the production of biohydrogen using cost-effective and green processes. On a longer term, the research has obvious positive impacts on environment and public health.
