Elemental analysis and stable-isotope mass spectrometry

The grant provides 3 items of equipment that are crucial to high-throughput, rapid elemental and isotopic analysis of organic and inorganic compounds, which is the fundamental procedure for the applicant's research programs that are currently funded by NSERC and SSHRC.  Both of these funded programs require hihg-resolution elemental and stable-isotope analysis in order to increase our understanding of ancient and modern climates.  The equipment requested are the primary instruments in the applicant's Stable-Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratory that are used on a routinely daily basis.  The 3 items requested are the most important analytical instruments to provide critical homogenization of samples, high-precision on small sample weights and subsequently the abundance of elements such as carbon, nitrogen and sulphur in samples.
