High performance liquid chromatography system

The current grant proposal is about replacing a High performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC)bought in the early eighties. The system broke 4 months ago and cannot be repaired because it is too old. The replacement parts are no longer available on the market.   The HPLC technology is intensively used by the members of our research center (Center of research in forest biology (CRBF)) and the current situation jeopardizes severals research projects and the training of severals graduate students. It appears that there is no availabity of such system in the region of Quebec because all HPLC systems in the region (Medical and other research centers of the Quebec city region) are intensively used. High performance liquid chromatography is an important element of the CRBF analytical infrastructure. Our research center has a politic of equipment sharing among all regular members (19 professors, 16 associated researchers, 8 post-doc, 130 graduate students, and 31 research professionals). The maintenance of the HPLC and the supervision (student training etc)of the users are under the responsabilty of E. Bauce (professor) and M. Charest (biochemist) of the forest entomology research laboratory. In addition to covering the needs of the CRBF members (analysis of sugars, amino acids, polyphenolics etc.), the HPLC is used in collaborative research projects in forest entomology with colleagues from Concordia University, University of New-Brunswick, Canadian Forestry Service, University of Viscosa (Brazil), University of Wisconsin, University of Montreal etc.  These projects are in a large part supported by NSERC (Bauce-discovery grant; Quiring et al (NSERC-CRDG); Bauce (NSERC-CRDG). In these research projects, HPLC is used to analyse tree foliage polyphenolics, amino acids and soluble sugars. Fraction collector is used to prepare samples for insect bioassay with plant polyphenolics.
