The chemistry group at the University of Toronto at Mississauga proposes to purchase a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer to support research in synthetic chemistry.   The new facility will be made available 24 hours a day to more than 50 postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate researchers in the areas of bio-organic, inorganic, polymer, analytical, and biophysical chemistry, and it will also be critically needed to support research by new faculty to be hired within the framework of the Medical Academy at UTM, beginning in 2007. The equipment is essential for satisfying local instrument needs and securing a thriving synthetic chemistry research environment in areas of vital interest to Canadian research and business. Through this investment, the department also will strengthen the association with Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Companies already closely linked with the graduate UTM Master of Biotechnology Program ( http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/1659.0.html), with local chemical companies in Mississauga, and with the neighboring Sheridan Science and Technology Park ( http://www.sheridanpark.ca). Most PIs in the chemistry group at UTM rely heavily on chemical synthesis as an integral component of their research.
