A group of internationally recognized researchers in Biochemistry and Microbiology propose purchasing a state of the art microscope.  The microscope is capable of discriminating a range of fluorescent probes and producing high resolution reconstructions that show the relative positions of the probes within cells and tissues.  It is an essential tool for modern biomedical sciences.  The research that requires this instrument is at the forefront of understanding how bacteria, viruses, and parasites infect cells, how cells regulate the expression of genes, and how cells use chemical signals to communicate.  Together, the 7 researchers supervise over 40 highly qualified trainees and have demonstrated the ability to use this type of equipment to its full potential.  There is an urgent need for this equipment.
