The Organic Electronic Materials and Devices group at Dalhousie University was established by the awarding of initial Discovery and Research Tools and Infrastructure Grants two-and-a-half years ago. In that time, we have established a world-class laboratory with facilities for thin-film deposition, device fabrication, electrical and optical characterization, and photoelectron spectroscopic studies of the surfaces and interfaces of organic electronic materials. The group has employed a total of nine graduate, undergraduate summer, and undergraduate thesis students in this time. Research output in the year-and-a-half since our first equipment became operable has been significant, with six manuscripts published, accepted or submitted. And we are still ramping up!In this application for renewal of the Discovery Grant we are requesting a significant increase in our level of funding, to support this growing and productive research program. The requested funds would enable the group to grow from two to four graduate students. In addition to our ongoing studies of organic thin-film transistors, organic solar cells and organic light-emitting devices, this level of funding would enable new areas including molecular electronics, self-assembled multilayer electronic structures, single-molecule transistors, transport in graphene nanoribbons and graphene nanoribbon transistors.
