With the renewed fears of an avian influenza outbreak resulting in another human pandemic, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how viruses interact with their host, are transmitted and how they might change. Equally important, from the host point of view, is to develop procedures and vaccines and diagnostic reagents which can help reduce the incidence and spread of viral diseases, including influenza viruses. Our research groups are working on to address the questions how viruses (for example fowl adenovirus of chickens) and bacteria (for example Mannheimia haemolytica in cattle) can cause disease in animals and on developing efficacious vaccines against them and other microbes.Ultracentrifugation is a basic technique for separation and concentration of whole microorganisms and/or their components. The methodology cannot be substituted therefore centrifuges are essential equipment to any research laboratory. The ultracentrifuge requested in this proposal will serve a group of 7 researchers and will be used routinely by the applicants (and others in the Department) and their laboratory personnel to achieve their research goals in the area of veterinary virology, bacteriology, immunology and vaccinology.  The ultracentrifuge is also needed at different levels of training (graduate and undergraduate programs).
