Ultracentrifuge and rotors

At York University we have a large number of researchers in the Department of Biology, the School of Kinesiology and Health Science, and the Muscle Health Research Centre (MHRC) that require the use of an Ultracentrifuge. This is a fundamental piece of equipment that is used for the isolation of different cellular components, like membranes, cytoplasm, organelles and DNA. Because of the cost of the ultracentrifuge and its associated rotors, it is often shared among many users. As the Director of the MHRC, I am submitting this application on behalf of 37 faculty members in these 3 research units who do biochemical research that potentially could make use of this equipment. Seven (7) of these faculty members are major users who employ it regularly. This equipment will increase our capacity for this fundamental cell analysis and dissipate the logjam of users who currently line-up to use the one, aging and out-dated ultracentrifuge that currently exists among these 3 research-intensive units.
