With the renewed fears of an avian influenza outbreak resulting in another human pandemic, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how viruses interact with their host, how they are transmitted and how they might change. Equally important, from the host point of view, is to develop procedures and vaccines and diagnostic reagents which can help reduce the incidence and spread of viral diseases, including influenza viruses. Our research groups are working to address the questions how viruses (for example fowl adenovirus of chickens and a retrovirus of sheep) can cause disease in animals and on developing efficacious vaccines against them.
