X-ray crystallography is a tool that enables researchers to obtain a 3-dimensional image of a compound on a molecular level. It is an immensely powerful technique for researchers in any domain that involves the preparation of new compounds. It provides definitive proof of the structure of a compound at the level of detail of a fraction of a typical bond. The twelve inorganic and organic chemists at the University of Calgary rely on this technique heavily for structural information critical to research progress. The requested instrument will augment and improve upon the capacity of the existing 6-year old instrument presently housed in the Department of Chemistry. While still functioning, even operating around-the-clock, queues for the existing instrument are typically weeks and individual samples degrade or decompose completely during this time. The lengthy queues also mandate that some lengthier experiments cannot be conducted. With the arrival of several young researchers and the confirmed continued growth of the Department of Chemistry, expansion of the departmental X-ray facility is critical. With the new infrastructure, the capability of the X-ray structural service will double as it is certain that both instruments will still function continually. This will greatly enhance research productivity for all twelve affected research teams and for the faculty hired in the next 5 years.
