Chiral photonics is related to the chiral symmetry of materials. It involves the fabrication, device implementation and fundamental understanding of chiroptical materials. Our research objectives are to fabricate new chiral organic materials using achiral molecules, to study chirality growth and propagation, to investigate their chiroptical properties. First part is the fabrication of chiral surfaces, study of their chiroptical properties and use as templates for the self-assembly of chiral materials. Second part is study of the build-up and propagation of chiral structures using second-harmonic generation which is a surface-specific nonlinear optical diagnostic tool and whose polarization properties carry chiral-specific signatures. Third is study of the build-up and propagation of chiral structures using nonlinear circular dichroism which is a volume-specific effect. We believe that we shed a new light on new materials with many anticipated applications: - The use of light propagation in chiral materials to detect small amounts of biological materials in biological and medical diagnostics. - The use of self organized chiral materials as seeds for enantiomer enrichment and separation in chiral synthesis and pharmaceutical applications. - The development of large chiroptical-nonlinear materials for plastic photonics. - The development of new materials for plastic electronics. The research program will explore several aspects of light-matter chiral interaction with organic materials at the border between physics and chemistry and will be carried out in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics at Queen's University.
