Lasers are widely used from nanotechnology and material processing to medicine. Recent advances in ultrafast laser science and technology opened new applications for diagnostics and monitoring in medicine. Laser tomography, laser phototherapy and laser surgery have become working techniques in medicine. The laser applications to biomedicine, environment, security and defense have created a new optical sensing paradigm and provide an opportunity for the engineering and life sciences research communities to jointly contribute to the heath, the environment and the security and defense challenges our society faces today.
