Voltage-gated potassium channels (VKCs) have an essential role in regulating the membrane potential in animal cells. By virtue of their response to changes in membrane potential they can open and close, altering the potassium ion conductance and thus its contribution to the membrane potential, as described by the Goldman equation. Animals typically can express a multitude of VKCs, by virtue of the presence of a large number of different genes and regulated mRNA splicing. The large number of protein sequence variants have structures that are similar in general, but that differ in significant details that affect the voltage sensitivity of the channel, the rate at which it opens and closes, and its susceptibility to a range of toxins.
