With the aging population, there is an ever-increasing need for efficient assistive technologies and smart biomedical data acquisition and processing systems for rehabilitation, performance assessment and health monitoring. Over the past seven years, our research group has developed enabling technologies for natural control of human-machine interfaces, including prosthetics and robotic devices, and for the study of human arm physiology, specifically for the analysis of muscle coordination. Our research builds upon the availability of accurate and reliable dynamic models of human arm biomechanics, where model inputs comprise surface electromyography (SEMG) signals collected from the major muscles of the upper-arm.
